The Stomp Build
This is currently the most popular BM hunter build. It provides good single target DPS with some passive cleave. The more crit and haste you have, the more fun this build is to play. In many cases it can perform slightly better than a Dire Frenzy build but ultimately both builds are viable.
is also a viable talent option with this build, performing very similarly (sometimes better, depending on gear) to Killer Cobra. Either talent works perfectly fine with this build.
For multiple target fights and dungeons, you can use
for a little more AoE damage with very little sacrifice to single target.
Dire Frenzy Build
This build has fallen out of favor recently, but it's still competitive with the Stomp build. Managing your Dire Frenzy stacks is a key element to making this build perform well, so in that case it is slightly harder to play than the Stomp build. It has decent sustained AoE but no passive cleave like the Stomp build does.
For multi-target fights and dungeons, you can use
instead of Crows. For dungeons, you can also optionally use

instead of Way of the Cobra since you'll be spending a lot of time casting Multi-Shots.
How do I choose between Dire Frenzy and Stomp?
Both BM hunter builds are relatively close to each other, but the Stomp build tends to be about 2% ahead of the Dire Frenzy build in a typical tier 21 gear setup. This difference is small enough that your own personal performance (maintaining a proper rotation while doing raid mechanics, not overspending Focus at the wrong times, etc.) is going to have much more impact than whatever build you choose. My recommendation is to play whatever build you prefer since both are viable. If you want the objectively best option regardless of all that, then you'll want to focus on the Stomp build.
Keep in mind that the Stomp build favors Critical Strike as its top stat (at least up to a point), while the Dire Frenzy build tends to favor Mastery over everything. So to be optimal you may want to switch some gear pieces and/or gems and enchants if you decide to switch builds.
Tier 1 Talents

: This Beast Mastery Hunter talent gives you more chance to crit with Auto Shot and Cobra Shot on fresh targets, along with the potential for more
procs in that window. Works best in situations where there is a constant stream of fresh new targets to take advantage of it.
: Increases the damage of
based on how many pets you have active. In most cases this talent will give you a 30% buff to

) but any extra beasts from

even more. The bonus is reduced to only 20% if you are using the
talent (tier 2), since there will be no

is the best choice for pure single target DPS because

Tier 2 Talents
: If you're interested in turning your
s into genuine weapons, this is the talent for you. Whenever a newly spawned
reaches their target, they stomp the ground and deal significant AoE damage within 8 yards. It's even a good choice for single target DPS.
: Replaces your Dire Beast to make your main pet more powerful. It causes your main pet to deal similar damage that your
would have done, but does it all instantly with 5 quick attacks. In addition, it generates twice as much Focus (24 vs. 12). Lastly, it gives your pet a 30% (42% with
) attack speed buff for 8 seconds. The attack speed buff stacks if refreshed before it expires with a
proc. Because of its 40-yard range, it also aids in pet target swapping.
: A shot stolen from the clutches of Marksmanship Hunters that deals frost and nature damage to 1-2 targets, and generates 10 Focus per target hit. It costs nothing to cast, and its cooldown is further reduced by your Haste stat.
is the default choice for its respective build.
is the default choice when using
lags behind the other choices in DPS and prevents you from taking the defining talents from Beast Mastery's two primary builds, so it's generally not recommended.
Tier 3 Talents
: Gives you a 60% movement speed increase for 5 seconds whenever you
: When your abilities crit, there is a 15% chance that
's cooldown will be reset.
: Whenever you haven't attacked a target for 3 seconds, your movement speed is increased by 30%. The movement speed buff is removed when you attack.
is the best talent here and is recommended for most situations.
is too random to rely on.
is more of a quality of life talent to help you get around faster. It can be useful for world content, transmog runs in old raids, that sort of thing.
has no real use in a raiding environment.
Tier 4 Talents
an additional 30% chance to proc (for a total of 50%). This is a key talent for the Stomp build. Those who enjoy lots of procs will be interested in that build and this talent. Not really recommended for the Dire Frenzy build or with a low (sub-30%) crit chance.
: Significantly buffs
damage. One of the must have talents for the Dire Frenzy build, but is also acceptable to use with the Stomp build if you have a low crit chance.
: Increases your pet's Basic Attack (
) damage by 100% and allows them to teleport to their target once every 20 seconds. It is very strong in multi-target situations because it buffs Beast Cleave damage.
is the recommended talent for the Stomp build but not recommended for use with Dire Frenzy.
is the best choice for the Dire Frenzy build.
is a versatile talent because it's decent in any situation -- especially for AoE damage -- but it is not a key component of any of the recommended builds.
Tier 5 Talents
: Beast Mastery's best overall Crowd Control ability. It requires the affected mobs to move slightly in order to trigger it.
: Incapacitates a single target for 30 seconds which breaks on damage.
: Unlike Binding Shot, this stun can be triggered on demand. It only affects one target, your pet must be in melee range of that target, and it has a longer cooldown than the other talents.
In most cases
will be your best bet because an AoE stun is one of the most potent crowd controls out there, especially in something like a Mythic+ dungeon where trash packs can be quite dangerous. There will always be situations where you want to lock down one particular mob for an extended period, and for that you can use
, but it is a bit redundant now that
has returned to Beast Mastery.
Tier 6 Talents
: Sends crows to attack your target and deal substantial damage over 15 sec. Costs 30 Focus on a 1 min cooldown. If the target dies with Crows active, the cooldown is reset. This is the best choice for single target DPS or for situations with priority adds that die quickly and are likely to trigger the cooldown reset.
: Deals burst AoE damage to targets in a cone in front of you. The main challenge here is pooling up 60 Focus to use this every 20 seconds. Without any active Focus regen, you have to do some planning to achieve this and it can be more trouble than it's worth for single target DPS.
: This talent is a simple toggle. When it's active, all of your auto shots will spend 3 Focus and deal AoE damage around the target. This is pretty nice sustained AoE damage, but you have to sacrifice a small amount of single target damage. Check the
of this guide for a Weakaura that will remind you to toggle it on.
is the best option for single target because of how much damage it deals to priority targets, and the cooldown reset potential. In multiple target situations,
is recommended as long as the targets are close together.
is generally not recommended for Beast Mastery, as the opportunity cost is simply too high (it can actually be a DPS loss to use this in single target) -- the 60 Focus is better spent elsewhere (like more Kill Commands or activating Beast Cleave).
Tier 7 Talents
: Summons many pets from the wild to literally Stampede at your target. The tricky part is that the direction of the stampede will be the direction that your character is facing when you cast it. The beasts hit everything in their path up to 30 yards away, so to maximize this 3-minute cooldown you'll want to place as many targets between you and the primary target as possible (and hope that your tank doesn't move them out of the Stampede).
is buffed by
, so you should always use it during
: When Bestial Wrath is active, your
resets the cooldown of
. This results in high single target damage during
. Be sure to enter Bestial Wrath with a full Focus bar to fully take advantage.
: As long as your pet is in Ferocity spec, every
will do a little bit of extra bleed damage to the target. The bonus for Tenacity and Cunning pets are more focused around soloing and PvP, respectively.
is the default single target choice, but
is also viable in single target (either slightly below or above Killer Cobra, depending on your gear).
is also a good choice for raid encounters where you spend a good portion of your time casting Multi-Shots instead of Cobra Shots (thus not benefiting from Killer Cobra as much).
struggles to find a niche because of how much single target DPS is sacrificed, but it can have its uses when burst AoE is needed such as quickly killing Sickly Tadpoles on Mythic Harjatan or doing massive Mythic+ pulls.
