The Pre-Patch launched earlier today and throughout the pre-patch, we'll be launching a community opinions article for every class and spec. In this post, we'll be taking a look at the state of Assassination Rogue!
We reached out to the Assassination Rogue community to give their thoughts and opinions on the changes and current state of Assassination Rogue in the pre-patch.

Ravenholdt is the online community for rogues. From social to guides, to theorycrafting, we do rogue.
- Theorycrafter, guide writer and moderator in the Ravenholdt discord.

Assassination will remain as an entry level spec due to its slow speed and simplicity. It was toned down a little further and stripped of some little nuances coming from legion. It still retains its strong fantasy of letting your targets rot away with powerful damage over time effects.
Largest change for assassination in BFA will be the addition of haste scaling with our damage over time effects. This will finally allow us to make use of the stat itself and impact on how our gameplay changes over the course of the expansion. Prior to this change haste was mainly a dead stat that had little to no effect on our rotation.
Moving from legion to BFA we are also losing a lot of small passives and effects due to the retirement of our artefact weapons. Many of these were small meaningless momentary damage modifiers such as

. There were however a few traits that made the rotation slightly more faster paced. Loss of said traits with the loss of secondary stats from end of expansion state and loss of our tier 21 might make BFA assassination feel like a slug in comparison. The specs already slow APM will be significantly more slow and noticeable at the start of the new expansion.
The final loss, that some deem the biggest one, is the departure of the ability we gained from our Kingslayers,
. Many of us are sad to see such an interesting and spec defining ability from a design standpoint.
also had some moments during legion, where well planned and executed usage of it rewarded the player accordingly. This type of abilities are important for player engagement, as having immediate feedback on how well they are performing, is a simple way to give player a satisfying feeling on playing properly. It is like a fun mini game to see each time, how high you can stack
: We still keep
which is the most boring talent ever and causes some imbalance between bleed and poison build choice. That said, it is still fairly neutral in most eyes.
: Over the course of the beta, this talent went from looking to be more interesting into looking like it is lost. You cannot chain it reliably anymore due to the lowered duration, it clashes with the gameplay of maximising envenom uptime and just falls into this middle ground of not knowing what it wants to be.
: Now rebranded! Now also way less impressive as an execute! This talent was something people were happy to have back in their rotation. The current tuning of the talent suffers from the same loss of identity as
. It is designed to be an execute we can opt in for, but in reality falls quite flat in execute department. Its power in execute has to be somewhat low by design due to it being usable outside execute with procs. This is a tradeoff between proper execute and some randomness to spice up regular rotation.
: Both are nice talents and vary considerably from their Legion versions.
: Turned out not feeling as horrible as many anticipated. It is still a talent one can use to start combat with a quick punch.
: Neither of these talents is seeing a change.
: Anticipation being replaced with
is a welcome change. Anticipation has really not seen any play all expansion in Legion and was barely better than the other two talents in the row in very niche and and generally nonexistent situations.
has been reworked into a single target focused talent and has had its power level reduced a lot. This is good to combat the resource flood seen in Legion, but it clashes with other talents such as
. This may be better included with a reduced effect.
: There is nothing particularly amazing or new about this spell. It is an extra button you ended up pressing on cooldown in Legion and disregarding its effect to a degree. This would be an excellent talent to swap places with
. Both serve very similar roles with
having a better mental response from players.
: This is still one of the cooler spells in game; it makes dps feel good during Exsanguinated bleeds and its impact can be very easily felt. Interesting to see how it turns out with hasted bleeds.
: How the mighty have fallen. Once a parse defining passive is now the go to shut off your brain talent on the row. Damage was lowered and made more consistent so
ended up feeling like nothing. For balance purposes this is a great improvement, but gameplay feel wise it is now nonexistent.
: Currently has no place in assassination rogues kit. For single target damage you pick
and for proper AoE you pick
. The design of this talent is simply underwhelming and still clashes badly with the assassination AoE rotation.
: Seems to be making a glorious return. When in past this spell was completely useless in assassination rogues kit, it now has a place in proper AoE. It packs a punch that is needed for rotting down several enemies at once. Only downside being it loses in visuals to some of the more amazing spells like mage's Living Bomb.
All in all some of the changes are good. Limiting resources in a way that actually affects our thought process is a positive thing. The simplicity of Assassination gameplay at higher levels is troubling. You put up your bleeds and then you mutilate to envenom. There is no big focus as there was on
, there are no small tracking items like tier bonus’ and
tied to Envenom. Even the early looks at Azerite traits for Assassination have been really underwhelming. Outlaw at least got to keep their legendary wrist effect which spices up the rotation nicely. Having an option to at least talent into a more complex version of the spec would be a great addition.
