The Legion Alpha is filled with numerous UI additions and improvements, ranging from massive developments like the Wardrobe Transmog tab and revamped Profession UI to effective smaller tweaks like a new Combo Point UI. Below are the major changes we've found - while these are all subject to change as Legion is in very early development, it's a good start.
Transmog Collection and Wardrobe
At the top of the Wardrobe UI, there is a progress bar showing how many appearances for a particular slot you have collected.
The new options shirts, tabards, and weapon illusions are included.
When you acquire a quest item, you receive a message that several appearances have been added to your Wardrobe collection. You can then delete that item and keep the transmog appearance.
At BlizzCon, it was announced that all rewards from quests you'd previously completed would automatically be added to your Wardrobe collection. (This is not implemented yet.)
The actual items included in the transmog UI seemed buggy, so we'll be highlighting what's included at a later time. However, the UI for displaying items is very user-friendly, with image thumbnails of all the various models.
Mousing over an image thumbnail brings up the name of the transmog item, as well as a list of items with the same appearance. Hit tab to cycle through them.
There are options to preview your character wearing the selected gear, and to create and save outfits.
As previewed at BlizzCon, Professions has a completely revamped UI that better highlights your complete collection of recipes.
The Professions window is much larger than before - no scrolling needed.
At the top of the window, you can see your profession level, quickly link your collection to others, search for a recipe, and sort between Learned and Unlearned recipes.
The Left window groups together your collection and remaining recipes, and the Right window highlights the reagents for the recipe selected.
Filter options include recipes you have materials for, has skillups, slots, category, and sources.
There are many new categories for recipes in Legion. Cooking, for example, has Food of the Broken Isles - Snacks, Light Meals, Large Meals, Delicacies, Feasts.
When looking at your Unlearned recipes tab, you can see what recipes you have materials for.
Legion recipes come with star ranks--higher ranks mean the recipe will take less materials. This is displayed to the right of your recipe name.
Systems and Graphics
Currently, the Base Settings Bar has five options--Low, Fair, Good, High, and Ultra. In Legion, this bar displays Low, Fair, High, and Ultra, and there are two graphics settings between each named option, for a total of 10 preset graphics options.
Outline Mode now has three options - Disabled, Good, High, up from Disabled and Enabled
Environment options - View Distance, Environment Detail, and Ground Clutter, now have more options and are displayed as a slider bar instead of a dropdown menu. View Distance goes up to 10, and Environment Detail and Ground Clutter go up to 7.
In Advanced options for Mac Users only, there is a new Graphics API option: Metal or Open GL.
In sounds, there is a new Sound Cache option - Small (16 MB) or Large (64 MB)
Combat, Display, and Names now have orange ! by their names, indicating important new customization options.
In the Combat menu, you will find an option to Flash Screen at Low Health - this turns the edges of your screen bright red.
The Display tab has several new options.
Personal Resource Display - this adds Health and Resource information below your character. Resources are things like Combo Points, Soul Shards, Holy Power.
The new Self-Highlight option lets you highlight your character with a Circle, or Circle + Outline.
You have the options to highlight your character in raids, battlegrounds, or only in combat in those places.
Names has the new "Show All Nameplates" option - by default, nameplates only show in combat, but now they will show all the time.
Talents, Spells, Specialization
The "Learn" button is gone from the Talent pane - you simply click on a talent and automatically get it added to your spellbook.
There is a star above one of your specializations - this is your Primary specialization, which can be changed by talking to a trainer. This system seems incomplete right now, as we know that tri-spec is coming in Legion.
There is a recommended primary stat listed on your specialization page.
Level 1 characters start with one specialization in their spellbook, and can respec at level 10.
In addition to the Interface option to display health and resources in the center of the screen, the resource UI bar has been redesigned with clearer graphics.
The combat text numbers are much crisper, especially on crits. Thanks
Questing and Rares
For important quests, there is a new dialogue system where NPCs tell you more about the quest as you progress further into it. This is more visually-appealing, with an animated portrait of the NPC next to the text.
Rare spawns now show up on the minimap as silver stars, not skulls.
Items that grant Artifact Power say so with an additional orange line of text on their tooltips.
Since artifacts are beige, heirloom text is now light blue.
Relics now have a jewel-like border, so they are easy to spot in your bags to socket into your artifact.
