The "Safe Haven" cinematic released earlier this week introduced Thrall to Battle for Azeroth's story, as he teams up with Saurfang to fight for the Horde. For May's lore spotlight, we'll review some of the major players in Saurfang's rebellion.
Our aim is to provide a monthly roundup on characters in the spotlight, supplementing our monthly lore spotlights with Nobbel87. For January 2019 we wrote about
important characters in Dazar'alor
, for February we covered
characters from the raid's aftermath
, for March we
covered characters from important 8.1.5 quests
, and for April we
featured characters from Crucible of Storms
Also be sure to check out our
analysis of the "Safe Haven" cinematic
, covering parallels to his father, why Sylvanas sent the assassins, and Thrall's guilt.
Who do you think will be in June's character spotlight?
Thrall, birthed with the name Go'el, is the son of legendary orcs Durotan and Draka. Thrall is the founder of the nation of Durotar in Kalimdor, a former Warchief of the Horde, and a shaman of the Earthen Ring. It is discovered that after the events of the beginning of Legion, Thrall went to Nagrand in Outland to live a peaceful life with Aggra and Durak. Some time after this, Thrall was approached by Saurfang, who asks Thrall to return and fight once more for the Horde.

High Overlord Varok Saurfang was the racial leader of the Orcs. Younger brother to the legendary Broxigar the Red and esteemed Warrior of the Blackrock Clan, Saurfang is a veteran of all three Wars, as well as the Supreme Commander of the Azeroth Forces during the War of the Shifting Sands.
As the first line of defense in Orgrimmar, Saurfang quickly became a meme with how relentlessly he would cleave down Alliance players with his Arcanite Reaper, to the point of being lauded in-game as the greatest axe-wielding Warrior in all of Azeroth.
In Battle for Azeroth, Saurfang's story is told through a sequence of cinematics, detailing his disillusionment with Sylvanas' regime, capture at the hands of the Alliance, escape from the Stockades with the help of Anduin, and most recently, his journey to Nagrand to convince Thrall to fight for the Horde.

We've seen Anduin grow up through World of Warcraft, now serving as the High King of the Alliance since Varian's death in Legion. In the "Lost Honor" cinematic, Anduin frees Saurfang from prison, because he can't defeat Sylvanas alone. Thanks to Anduin's intervention, Saurfang was able to escape from Stormwind, journey through the Dark Portal, and convince Thrall to come back.

Baine Bloodhoof, High Chieftain and Leader of the Bloodhoof Tribe, frequently clashed with Sylvanas in
Battle for Azeroth
. In Patch 8.1.5, he finally takes a stand and rescues Derek Proudmoore, but draws the wrath of Sylvanas. This has led to his imprisonment in Orgrimmar, which is explored further in Patch 8.2.
