I never got particularly into fighting games. Until fairly recently, I could never pull off any of the special moves with any amount of regularity, let alone ridiculously complicated combos, and without being able to do the move you want to do, suddenly you're not competing against the person you're sitting next to or against a computer, you're competing against your own hand eye coordination. I'm not down on personal tests of hand eye coordination, but I generally dislike situations in which I'm faced with a challenge that I need to surpass to even be able to compete on the same level as someone else.
That's why I'm so excited about Street Fighter 4. According to my brief experiences playing it (it only was released for consoles on the 17th), and what I've read about it, it seems like they're trying to move away from complicated special moves and combos, and towards predicting what the opponent is going to do, and reacting to it before they can do it.
I guess what I'm really trying to say here is that I don't particularly like PvP.
Have you ever had your level 30 alt challenged to a duel by a 19 twink outside Ironforge? This always boggles me. At best, I beat you, where I beat you because I'm eleven levels higher than you or, and at worst, you beat me, and I get humiliated cause I just lost to someone less than two thirds my level. How exactly is this a good idea for me?
If I go into a battleground at level 22, I'm at a significant disadvantage, because most of the people there are 29. It's not an insurmountable disadvantage—everybody's heard forum boasting of some 19 twink that felled an unprepared guy in his mid 50s in world PvP—but it's undeniable that being lower level is a disadvantage, however small.
I may differ from many of you in this regard, but I don't really enjoy overcoming challenges where it's hard only because I have some massive handicap. If I want a game to be hard, I want it to be hard because my opponent is stepping up their game, not because I'm at a natural disadvantage.
When I play most fighting games, I feel like I need to invest so much time learning the moves and combos that I'm not willing to spend four hours just to be able to play on the same level as everybody else. And yet, if I'm going to go play some Arathi Basin, I need to be level 39 to compete on the same level as everybody else. So, to ensure that, I need to invest time in the grind.
Make no mistake, I'll PvP occasionally, and it's a fun little distraction if I want to play WoW, but don't feel like instancing or grinding, but I've never PvPed with an honest eye towards winning or even being particularly good at it. If I wanted to be good at it, I'd need to reach the right level, then get the right equipment, and while I might PvP for a little while, when I win, I
feel like I'm just playing a different game than everyone else.
I have a hunch that those willing to invest the time to get the gear and the experience to excel in PvP are people who wouldn't mind playing fighting games. What about you?
