Time to deconstruct another boss' strategy! Har har har!
I love silly jokes. They make me... silly. But it's true -
is the subject of today's Strategist. Similarly to the other Ulduar bosses, not a whole lot is known XT, other than the fact that he is the last boss in the Siege of Ulduar, he is a mandatory fight, and his voice is the single reason people wipe on him.
XT-002 is located in the Scrapyard, between the Formation Grounds and the Antechamber of Ulduar. He is another one of
's creations, whom XT considers to be his father. Hence the boyish voice, the diligent exercise and dutiful guard. You need to defeat XT in order to proceed further in Ulduar, even if you skip the optional Ignis and Razroscale. The Deconstructor also has a hard mode.
And now, skipping over the break, let's take a look at He-who-does-not-drop-my-
If you skipped Ignis, XT has a nasty surprise for you - trash! Ironic for a boss located in the Scrapyard of Ulduar... But here is what you are going to encounter in the two packs of trash before the boss. I am listing the various robots in the other they should be killed, but the Technicians are the only real priority; the rest can be AoE'd.
Parts Recovery Technician
- Those little mechanognomes (2-3 in each pull) will use
, which is a defensive shield centered around them, reducing all damage by 90%. Either interrupt/stun them so they don't cast it, or drag the entire pack of mobs outside the shield(s).
- Those guys summon
, which will add some extra damage to the raid. Nothing to worry about really.
- They jump to a random raid member and smack them, going to their tank afterwards, much like
. Generally a nuisance, but not a danger.
- Watch out for
they cast when low on health. There will be an emote to warn you. Similarly to the
in Naxxramas' Plague Wing, those bots will need to be burned quickly when they reach ~15% health.
If you are AoEing the entire packs, be mindful of the Disposalbots. Their self-destruct can easily hit for 15k damage in a fairly wide radius. If two of them explode at the same time, you will be flying through the black-and-white world and using that nifty
After clearing the trash, you can enjoy the sight of XT-002, a giant robot, walking left and right, doing exercises. Very profound image.
When you are done with this, you can actually proceed and pull. There are two basic ways to do the fight - the way Blizzard meant us to do it, and the way we actually do it:
How Blizzard Wanted Us to Fight XT-002:
Tank the boss in the middle, at the base of the stairs, or on the actual stairs. DPS, be spread out, kill all the adds coming from all four corners every time the Heart drops down.
How We Actually Fight Him:
Tank the boss far to one of the sides, between the two piles of scrap. This way whenever the Heart starts leaking energy, you will get spawns only from 2 scrap piles instead of all 4. And those 2 will be the ones far away, giving you extra time to DPS the heart.
You will want your melee DPS roughly stacked in two groups behind the boss, forming a triangle with the tank. Every time a melee DPS is charged with either
, they should run away in the direction they have been placed. So if you are DPSing XT from the right side, every time you get Light/Bomb, you will run to the right,
not through all the other melee DPS in a homicidal run
. I'll talk about how far away in a moment.
Your ranged DPS and healers should also be stacked, but in one group. You can do two if you prefer to, but I have found one to work better - because of all the AoE heals out there. So your ranged is also stacked now. One option is to have designated sides for Searing Light and Gravity Bomb - say, if you have SL, run left; if you have GB, run right. Or you can just tell the ranged to get away from the group if they get a bomb. People are generally smart enough (or have decent instincts) not to run towards a person beaming with hurtful light. Back when my guild was doing XT for the first few times Searing Light was actually called "Light Bomb", so the way we remembered the directions was "
ight". Now the casters just run away from the group, it works well enough. Be sure not to go out of healing range however!
As far as ranges go... 10 yards will do the trick for Searing Light.
on DBM will have 10 yards for default value, so it's particularly useful here. Gravity Bomb has 20 yards. It will pull your buddies to you if you are haven't put sufficient distance between you and them. If you are too close to the melee, it's not too bad - you will lose some DPS, but you can recover easily (which is no excuse to be there!). If you are too close to the casters however, interrupted heals in a critical moment
mean the death of your tank, and likely a wipe.
So get away from everybody!
is the last spell to watch for during this phase, and the reason you are stacking so well. It will damage everybody for 80% of their maximum health over 8 seconds (10% per second). Occasionally you will get Tantrum
SL/GB. This means that the person charged with the extra spell will need extra healing, or just die.
Adds and Hearts
Every 25% of his health (while not in hard mode), XT will require a break. You guys are toiling the boy too much!
When XT goes to rest, he will become unattackable, but his
will be exposed and attackable. It will remain exposed for exactly 30 seconds, during which time it will leak energy and summon a random number of adds from the 4 (but since you are doing the naughty way, only 2) piles of scrap. Here are the possible adds:
- No more than 1 per pile (but you can get none). They are general weak trash that still hits hard enough to require a tank. A single OT can take care of, maybe up to 6-8 of those, if he manages not to turn his back to them. They have
, so tank them a little away from the caster group.
- These will run (slowly) to XT and repair him, sacrificing themselves in the process. Each Scrapbot will restore 1% of XT's health. They will come in packs of ~6-10. Due to their low health, AoE is the way to deal with them.
- Few of those will spawn. They will explode as they die, inflicting damage to everything around them - players and other bots alike. If you can slow/root them and kill them while there are Scrapbots around, the fight will be a little easier. Don't let them get to your group though.
Use your time wisely while in this phase. The Heart takes 100% extra damage, and all the damage done to it will transfer to XT after the end of the phase. If you get the Heart really low, it is entirely possible to end one add phase just to enter another one immediately after.
Regardless of how much damage you inflict on the heart (unless you kill it for hard mode), 30 seconds after it is exposed, XT will re-enter his normal phase, resuming attacks, Searing Lights, Gravity Bombs and Tympanic Tantrums. Finish off the Scrap- and Boombots and just leave an OT to take care of the Pummellers if you have any.
XT's hard mode, in my opinion, is one of the easier ones - it's a gear check. Your tank will need to be able to take the extra strong hits, your healers - able to help the tank survive, and your DPS - able to beat the berserk timer. There are a few tricks to winning however.
First, you need to be able to kill the Heart in a 30 seconds. This means using all your cooldowns, trinkets, Bloodlust/Heroism, and telling your tank to stop slacking off and put some DPS finally. Knowing that there is absolutely no damage taken until the adds come really close, your healers should be helping as well. Have no more than 1-2 DPS assigned to kill the adds, and an OT ready to take the 1-2 Pummellers that may spawn. Until then - everybody on the Heart. A Shadow Priest and a Frost Mage are particularly useful for the adds I hear.
Second, there will be no more adds, no more heart phases if you kill the heart. Just an angry angry XT. If you have Pummellers active, you should have a few DPS kill them, so your OT can be free. And you want him free so he can taunt the Life Sparks spawned by Searing Light. You can make do without the tank doing that, but your DPS is bound to take a few 16k hits you can avoid with a tank (or mitigate a lot). As a tank myself, I have found it easy to make a macro like this:
/target Life Spark
/cast Hand of Reckoning /*or whatever 8-second taunt you have*/
/cast Exorcism /*or whatever 10-15 second cooldown ranged spell you have*/
If you are tanking, you should also try to follow the people with Searing Light around, at ~15 yards range and be ready to hit the macro as soon as you see a spark spawning. All of the DPS should be switching to it and killing it
as soon as possible
The other perk of the hard mode are the void zones spawned by Gravity Bombs. Generally not too bad. Have your left-side-melee-DPS run to a designated spot to the left and drop their zones there, your right-side melee - somewhere on the right side, and your casters - somewhere far away from the boss, behind the group, towards the center of the room. This should leave your Searing Light victims enough room to run around and have their sparks taunted.
The Siege of Ulduar
- Defeat XT-002 Deconstructor to earn credit for this achievement.
- Defeat XT-002 without allowing any Scrapbots to reach him. Assigning a few AoE DPS on the Scrapbots and telling them to go easy on the Heart and focus the bots down makes this achievement easy.
Nerf Gravity Bombs
- Defeat XT-002 without anyone dying at Gravity Bombs. Another easy one, as long as the people charged with Gravity Bombs run 20+ yards away from everybody else. Using DBM's
and setting it to 20 yards helps.
- Use Boombots to kill 20 Scrapbots within 12 seconds. Snares and stuns work very well. If you have high DPS, you might consider burning through 1-2 Heart phases and chain snaring a lot of Scrapbots to die from a single Boombot.
Must Deconstruct Faster
- Defeat XT-002 in less than 3 minutes 25 seconds. On Normal, you need to be able to sustain ~10,000 DPS combined DPS during the boss phases, and ~30,000 DPS during the Heart phases. On Heroic the numbers are ~62,000 DPS on Boss phases, and ~133,000 DPS on Heart phases. The Heart phase numbers may seem a little too high, but this is an achievement heavily dependent on gear and proper cooldown usage. The numbers assume maximum damage done to the Heart without killing it (the actual numbers are a little lower, but it won't hurt to push your DPS a little :) ). Keep in mind, you will need so spend some time during each Heart phase to kill the incoming adds - those calculations assume none of the Scrapbots reach XT.
- Defeat XT-002 after destroying his heart. You will need ~30,000 combined DPS on Normal, or ~130,000 DPS on Heroic. Required for
Glory of the Ulduar Raider
Champion of Ulduar
- Defeat XT-002 Deconstructor on your first try for this lock-out period, without anyone in the raid dying. AoE healing and good awareness of the Searing Lights/Gravity Bombs are key to winning this.
