Hey all! Neutronimity here, your friendly neighborhood German translator! Some of you may remember that I am
a blogger, from back in the
days. Seeing as how I'm STILL a blogger, I figured it was time I earned the title!
I know some people are still a bit unfamiliar with using the database, so I decided to write a series of posts to illustrate a few examples of how you can utilize Wowhead to its fullest potential. I hope to be be covering most of the site's tools and taking advantage of their detailed guides. What you'll be reading is a collection of example tasks, using Wowhead, which should inspire you to come up with a similar methods of fulfilling your goals—whatever they may be.
Curious? Read on after the break!
PS: I would like to thank
for feedback and ideas, and
for generously editing and correcting my rather ragged English.
Tools Being Used
In this example I am trying to create a wish list for a fictitious character: Let's say, a level 80 Blood Elf Paladin that wants to DPS for his guild but does not have access to raids since his gear is not good enough (yet). He does have access to heroics and finishes them successfully most of the time (
you never know with PUGs...
Note: Using the Profiler to its maximum extent requires a Wowhead account. If you are interested, here is the
Tip: Having a Premium account grants you more and greater perks of using Wowhead. Check out the
if you're interested in those. :)
Firstly, we need to know which minimum stats are recommended for a raiding Retribution Paladin. Research on the Internet or in the Wowhead Paladin forum (which is found
) will show that Paladins only have two stats to cap, and a few others to stack once the caps are reached.
Below is a quick overview:
Melee Hit Chance cap: ~8% equaling to 263 Melee Hit Rating
(not considering Racials)
Expertise Skill cap: ~26 equaling to 214 Expertise Rating
(not considering Racials)
Strength > Critical Strike Rating > Attack Power > Agility > Haste
Using the Profiler
Setting it up
Now that we have the information, we'll set up a custom profile that will serve as a wish list. If you are logged in, go to My profiles at the top of the screen, have the list drop down and hit
in order to create a custom profile. Edit the details to fit with the character for which you want to make a wish list. Let's start with
Tip: It's sometimes quicker to base your wish list on an already existing character of yours. To do this, simply browse to the
and enter your character details (such as name, region, realm, side and level) in the box on the top left. Once you find your character, go to its profile page and hit the
button at the top. Just like creating a new custom profile, enter your desired specifications and save the profile to ensure it will not be lost.
Setting Your Talent Points
Firstly, we need to set our talent points so the profiler will recognize your talent specialization. Head over to the talents tab in your custom profile and set them for optimum raiding in your spec.
is how I specced my Paladin.
I won't deny having used this spec, but it fits to my PvP playstyle. Don't fret. :-P
Tip: Don't forget to save your work!
A wonderful (and infinitely useful) feature enhancing the profiler is the ability to search for gear upgrades. Let's give it a shot
Right-click any slot and hit Find Upgrades. This will open a new tab, which will execute a quick item search for better items of the same slot that can be worn by your class at your level. In this example, I searched for upgrades for my head slot.
is the link to the result list with head items. These results are sorted by score, according to the default stat weights that Wowhead sets for your class and spec—but you can use the "Show Details" button under the weight scale to customize those weights. Note that gems
taken into consideration.
Naturally, as the best items drop in raids or are sold by vendors in exchange for Tier tokens, the list is populated with a lot of items you can't acquire yet. So we should customize the filter to meet our needs, looking for items that drop in 5-player dungeons, be they normal or heroic. We also can look for items that are purchased with
And since we are looking for
items, we'll want high level items (some of the raid items can be bought via the Auction House, hence the BoE tag). As we are looking for multiple sources, we switch from
At least one
is what I came up with.
Tip: Are you curious about the Weighting Scale feature? It helps you assign imaginary values to stats you prefer—this way you can sort out items quickly that have stats you don't really want. And again, if you are interested in customizing these values, simply click show details next to the preset. Here is the
Equipping the Stuff
Now that you have chosen a few items that you consider worth getting, let's head back to the custom profile. By right-clicking a slot you can live-search items by name in the pop-up. Clicking an item will add it to the custom character profile—and the stats will update accordingly!
If you right-click the slot again, you will see that more options are available: adding gems, adding enchants, comparing items, un-equipping items, and the like. While enchants are frequently a matter of personal preference, you can use the weight scales for gems! There is currently no direct link, so you will have to open a new tab and go to the
, having the Weighting Scale enabled. A nice trick is filtering for gem slots, for example
Tip: Keep an eye on your stats—you will
to be close to the Melee/Spell Hit Rating and Expertise Skill cap. After you are capped, you can completely skip off Melee/Spell Hit Rating/Expertise Skill in the Weighting Scale stats in favor to other stats.
After you are done, your custom profile
) look like
So now that we've got ourselves a wish list, we can customize it using the same method detailed above. What else is left to do? Yeah, getting the stuff to drop, rolling, and winning it.
Thanks for sticking with me through a long post! There are more guides and tips and tricks like this coming up, so keep an eye out!
