If you want to get the most value from the maw it's actually really annoying, but there would be easy fixes.

To be fair, this is just the next chapter of "i need to minmax literally every single thing for no reason at all" for 99% of the playerbase. Far from me to tell anyone how to play the game, but realistically unless you are in a guild competing for the world first kill, unlocking sockets a couple days before everybody else will make literally no diffenence at all, considering that the amount of stygia requred to buy those is very high, it's very likely that the moment you unlock them you won't even be able to buy more than 1 socket (if even). Literally, the guys maximising stygia gains might actually be the smart ones in the end, reaching exalted a few days later but perhaps having enough currency to buy sockets straight away. Ultimately, it does not matter, everyone will get exalted with minmaxers doing so a couple days before. People trying to stick to ratios determining the most efficient gains and avoiding killing mobs and helping fellow players because "oh killing a mob gives me 6 eye of the jailer points" should honestly consider investing their sub money into a good shrink instead (again, unless youre that 0.00001% that races for world first). Just play the game, enjoy the activities, you will get there no matter what you do, honestly.
Sounds like the killing blow mechanic is garbage and the eye gain from killing blows should be removed completely.

Yeah, I think this post explains a lot of why the Maw feels bad-- killing mobs actively hinders your progress, and you can't mount past them, which is just an unending chain of suck.
I like the maw because I can wander a bit and there is a timer to tell me to do something else. This is wildly overthinking it
I wonder what the hotfixes on Tuesday/Wednesday will be for things mentioned in this article. Maybe immediate extermination can't be reset and stacks past 10? Or an increase to a level 6 effect, similar to the 200 corruption effect, that just kills you in 4 seconds? Or the -100% stygia debuff also includes a -100% to all rep gains in the maw? I'm sure there will be changes very soon, now that Dratnos' strat is on the front page. This just seems like a really convoluted way to play the Maw that Blizz didn't think of and won't like.
Me and my friends are still try to understand why we need to do the maw..... it's just for socket? What happened to blizz statement "let loot be loot"? are you telling me that we need to farm a rep in a boring slowing place to increase power.....will having full socket be mandatory as was in bfa been full corruption/socket? Please tell me now it's not mandatory or a lot of friends will stop playing now.... they (and I) got very pleased for the "loot be loot" aspect of the game that was the only reason to play shadowland cause we like raid and mythic+ but not farm for power outside from it (torghast got a special treatement cause it remind us of hades, a game that we love a lot, and got legendary! for doing super fun stuff!)
It's great that the Maw is basically optional, and I applaud that decision, but I don't feel being optional excuses it not being fun. Just IMO, obviously.
