As a level 31 druid, I did not have to defeat Stonefist. He calls off the guards and gives the information that is given in the next part of the quest from Trias per this site's quest rundown. I then spoke to Trias again, and he sent me to the Wetlands.

My party members did in fact have to defeat him and follow the mission the way this quest rundown explains.

Not sure what causes the variation. Any clues?

It seems if you deal with Dashel first then he calls off the other guys that are there attacking you. When I did the quest I couldn't actually kill him he turned friendly again when I got him down to about 20%. You can kill the guys that attack you with him but I don't see any need. After that you talk to him again to continue the chain.

Two level 25 thugs, Dashel himself is 26. Oddly enough, when he called his thugs off (at ~20-40%), my pet kept attacking them, so obviously that part is buggy ^^

Don't attack the guys once they stop attacking, because then you'll just have to fight both. I managed to complete Dashel's quest before dying.

i did this on my lvl 28 druid and somehow the quest is bugged, after i defeated them, his buddies didnt go away and continued to attack me. and to reply to the poster above. i didnt attack either guards at all but they still continued to attack me even after it was complete.

talked to him as a 28 shaman, his guys came and i threw down a stoneclaw and just attacked him, until he said enough... but his gaurds kept attacking, just ran around the courtyard once and they were gone and talked to him again and finsihed quest

I did this quest as a lvl 29 lock, and i attacked him as the quest tells you and for some reason the guards were still attacking even though they said "ok boss". i didn' use any curses, just pure dps.(shadow bolt, wand, etc)

Soloed as a 28 priest, talked to him, Bubbled, SW:Pain'd all 3, then psychic screamed, dealt with the thug that wasnt affected, then bubble, dealt with the other, just needed to desperate prayer right before i finished the second thug

haha! was a level 28 preist and decided to cheat. Buff up, accept the quest and run back outside. People running around stormwind always seem to jump in to help :D.

As a warrior 33 I had a little problem. I crited him and he died. I did not have a chance to talk to him. Afterwards I did not know what to do. I went to Elling Trias and he did not want to talk to me. Then i went back to Dashel Stonefist and he was there again. I killed him again and then I could continue in the chain.
So if you kill him do not worry he will respawn very soon ;-)

lvl 28 priest.... I got to this part in the quest line and it bugged. I had to drop quest.

i was pala 30, it was quite easy. after the guards appeared, Dashel Stonefist started attacking me too though still was "friendly" (yellow). i killed the guards, Dashel Stonefist kept on attacking me for some seconds and then stopped and turned green....

this is definitly a pain....i defeated him and the gaurds stopped attcking and then all of a sudden they started again and killed me. AAAAAAAHHH

As a level 28 pally it was no trouble at all. Killed the guards and beat Dashel down untill he gave up.

if nothing happens i just abandoned the quest and accepted it again from
Dashel worked for me...

The first time i tried to talk to him I had to fight him, but I wasn't paying attention and I died. I went back and talked to him again and didn't have to fight him.

When he told the two 'Old Town Thugs' to back down I had just started fighting one of them. They went green and then red immediately again and attacked me a second time. I had to kill them. A patroling guard happened to come to us, and he stood and watched the whole thing. Strange.
