Macros are simple, in-game tools which allow you to sequence spells together, create custom names and icons, cast different abilities depending on whether the target is friendly or hostile, define targeting conditions, and much, much more. While the amount of options can be complex, making them is easy, so in this section we'll go over how to set them up yourself.
To open the in-game Macro interface, type "/macro" or "/m".
Choose between the General and Character-specific macro tabs. Then click the "New" button on the macro window.
Choose a Name and an Icon so you can easily recognize your macro, then click "Okay."
Select your new macro and use the text editor below to tell it what to do. If copying ours below, you can simply copy/paste the text in.
Click the "Save" button, and drag your macro icon onto your bars, which will allow it to be used just like any other spell from your spellbook.
To close the window, click "Exit", or just press Escape.
For more information on creating macros, including full lists of conditionals, modifiers, and other command customizations you can use, check out our full
A common issue that people have with macros is that they might not work properly when trying to bind them to your mouse. To solve that, you can use
instead. Clique is a simple and lightweight add-on which can be used as a complete replacement of macros.
Simple Mouseover Macro
As a healer, you have to split your attention between what is happening during an encounter and the health of your group. Hard targeting an ally before each spell cast can really limit your reaction time, while having an enemy targeted makes it so that you can easily switch to damaging them in downtime, or at the least keep an eye on them for important information like buffs, cast bars, etc. Mouseover macros allow you to heal the raid frame of a player your mouse is over without having to target them specifically. This needs to be done for every targeted spell.
with any other spell.
Advanced Mouseover Macro
Also called: Help / Harm macros. This type of macro combines the above mouseover macro, with another spell on the same button. To use the other spell, your cursor must be away from any friendly player, and it will cast the 2nd spell on your target instead. In this case it would cast a Riptide on a friendly mouseover target but Flame Shock on your actual target, granted you have something targeted.
/use Riptide; Flame Shock
with any other set of spells. I personally combine those,
Every set does similar things, but defensively and offensively.
A cursor macro will cast the spell directly where your mouse is, instead of showing the targeting circle beforehand. Using this is personal preference and you will need to know how big the area of effect is in your head to use something like this. Spells you can use with this include
정신의 고리 토템
대지의 벽 토템
선조의 보호 토템
바람 질주 토템
They all have different sizes, so be sure you know them very well before using something like this macro!
/use Healing Rain
Using instead of cursor will instead cast those spells on your own position. This is not recommended as you don't really want them as yourself as the center, but it can be useful for spells like
바람 질주 토템
Sometimes you'll have to interrupt, which takes priority over any other spell you're casting. To do this optimally, you create a macro to stop your current cast and use
on your target, or focus - if you have one.
/use Wind Shear
Advanced Hex Macro
It's unlikely that you'll be using this a lot, as crowd control in general isn't as important anymore as it used to be. This macro will use
on your current target and set it as focus. If you already have a focus target, it will
that instead, and using shift with this macro will clear your focus and set your current target as focus instead.
Trinkets and other gear slots can have universal macros, saving you the work of dragging them to the action bar each time you change gear. 13 is the upper trinket slot, while you would use 14 for the lower one. This can be combined with mouseover macros for targeted trinkets, where you just use the number instead of a spell name.
A personal one of mine, which is useful if you're doing a lot of open world content. This macro will cast
and mount up at the same time, as I would always forget to do that. Just remember to change the 2 occurences of "Vulpine Familiar" to your preferred mount.
#showtooltip Vulpine Familiar
/cast Water Walking
/cast Vulpine Familiar
Resto Shamans have two talent rows that have multiple active abilities, where changing out them out can get tedious. Macros are able to change themselves based on what talent is used.
Level 60 Talents
/use Earthen Wall Totem
/use Ancestral Protection Totem
Level 100 Talents
Addons are powerful tools that can be used to both customize your gameplay experience, ranging from graphical overlays, replacement action bars, and unit/raid frames, to performance enhancements such as rotation helping spell reminders, buff/debuff tracking, popup reminders, and boss warnings. Here are some of the highly recommended and commonly used Resto Shaman addons, which are certainly not required to play, but can go a long way toward increasing the information available to you in combat or simply make for a more pleasant viewing experience.
Unlike Macros, managing Addons is done outside of the game, but our
How to Install and Maintain Addons Guide
will take you step-by-step through the process.
Raid Frame Replacement
Standard frames are very limited in customizability, but they're fine for basic usage. If you're looking for something more - these are the raid frames i would recommend.
Boss Encounter Addons
adds timers and other features specifically for raid encounters, while
does the same, just for dungeons. Both are extremely useful and close to mandatory for their given environments.
Exorsus Raid Tools
has a great amount of useful tools, especially the ability to list and check on your other healers cooldowns.
Mouseover Macro Replacement
While helpful, having a lot of mouseover macros takes up a lot of space for your character specific macros and are tedious to create.
is an easy to set up replacement that emulates mouseover macros. Another advantage of Clique is that its mouseovers only work on UI-elements, so you'll have no random heals thrown on people in the world your mouse happens to be over.
Full UI Replacement
is a popular addon which replaces your entire User Interface with a consistent style. What you make with that is your own thing, it can be just as good or bad as the standard UI or individual addons. You can disable and replace individual parts of it as needed.
has ElvUI profiles of people who set theirs up and uploaded them. Keep in mind that setups are very personal and you might run into profiles not fitting you at all, or hiding things you want to see - it's unlikely that you'll bump into the perfect setup. You might have to reload after activating profiles for them to work correctly.
A good and clean configuration from
, raid frames included. Keep in mind that many of the shown elements are not from ElvUI. His weakaura set is linked in the weakauras article.
One of the more popular profiles on that website is from
. It's a decent configuration and hides things you don't necessarily need - as screen space is important. This configuration is highly function over form and it also includes basic raid frames. The first screenshot shows how his profile arranges the elements and the second image shows it in action - keep in mind that many of the elements shown are not from ElvUI.
